YES 9012 LIVE DVD

Wat een bevalling… al heel erg lang aangekondigd, steeds weer uitgesteld maar dan nu eíndelijk op de markt; de DVD versie van ‘9012Live’ een van de eerste grote concertvideo’s uit de jaren tachtig. Niemand minder dan Steve Soderbergh, inderdaad de zeer succesvolle Hollywood regisseur, was de grote man van het project en hij zal met tevredenheid deze DVD bekijken denk ik. Want zoals de huidige muziekfan verlangt van een DVD staan er interessante extra’s op; naast het originele concert dat en mix is van concertbeelden en filmfragmenten en animaties is er ook een ‘schone’ versie te zien, staan er interviews uit die tijd op met de bandleden van toen Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin, Alan White en Tony Kaye én ook nog een grappige tour documentaire waarin vooral de hectiek en meligheid naar voren komt. Jon Anderson zei ooit dat hij destijds in de bioscoop naar Spinal Tap keek (mét Steve Soderbergh nota bene) en hij zag zijn eigen tour ervaringen voorbij komen. Een waar déjà vu dus.

Centraal staat het album ‘90125’ uit 1983 en uiteraard ontbreekt de megahit ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’ daarvan dan ook niet. Het is geen volledig concert overigens, dat moet worden gezegd en zodoende slaat de balans tussen de z.g. ‘Classic Yes’ en ’80’s Yes’ flink uit naar de laatstgenoemde periode. Tijdens de concerten van die tour was de balans beter in evenwicht, nu bleven alleen ‘I’ve Seen All Good People’ en ‘Starship Trooper’ over en als geste is ‘Roundabout’ nog toegevoegd als bonustrack. Het is een waar genot om de destijds wederopgestane band te zien spelen, al is het verschil groot met het hedendaagse Yes maar dat ‘m in de line up en het bijbehorende repertoire. Deze DVD doet het instituut Yes zeker eer aan en zal niet alleen de fans maar ook de top 40 mensen van toen zeker kunnen bekoren.

What a delivery this has been… often announced and postponed but now out there at last; the DVD version of  ‘9012Live’, one of the first major concertvideo’s of the eighties. Big man behind the project was none other than Steve Soderbergh, indeed the succesful Hollywood name of today and I think he will be satisfied with the way this DVD turned out. As the musiclover of today demands there are some nice extra’s included; apart from the original version of the concert, with movie images and animations there also is a ‘clean’ version available as well as interviews with the bandmembers of that time Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin, Alan White en Tony Kaye ánd a funny tour documentary showing both hectics and humor. Jon Anderson once said that he saw the Spinal Tap movie wíth Steve Soderbergh and he recognized several things of his own experiences.

The 1983 album ‘90125’ is the central point of the show and so the megahit ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’ is featured. The DVD doesn’t feature a full show, the balance between ‘Classic Yes’ and ’80’s Yes’ strongly points to the latter. The full shows of that time featured a better balanced scale, now only ‘I’ve Seen All Good People’ and ‘Starship Trooper’ are left period but ‘Roundabout’ has been gracefully added as a bonus track.

It really is treat to see the –at that time resurrected- band play on stage although there are quite a few differences with the Yes of today, that has to do with the line up and the according repertoire. This DVD does justice to the institute that is Yes and is very interesting to both Yesfans and the Top 40 followers of that time.
