Aziatische invasie in Verviers (B)!
Aanval met gele koorts, SARS of Aziatische griep?
 
Nee hoor, gewoon een concert van de groep Asia in club Spirit Of 66 te Verviers in Franstalig België. Wie kent ze nog, de eens zo geroemde supergroep waar ooit 2 Yesleden in zaten (Steve Howe, Geoff Downes), samen met nog 2 andere progrock-kleppers (Carl Palmer, John Wetton)?
De pub -van het slag "American bar"- zat afgeladen vol, en dat voor een dag middenin de week en ondanks het feit dat Asia nu ook weer niet zo in de running meer is. Minuscuul podium, nauwelijks groot genoeg voor de groep met al die klavieren van Geoff Downes en de grote drumkit van Chris Slade. En dat voor een gewezen "supergroep"!
De line-up van Asia was die van Silent Nation, hun laatste album van dit jaar: de eerder genoemde Downes en Slade plus John Payne en Guthrie Govan op snaren (bas en gitaren onderling verwisselend). Van de oergroep is dus alleen Geoff Downes overgebleven, logisch als je weet dat hij voor 95 % van het totale repertoire instaat voor de composities, tesamen met vooreerst John Wetton, en nadien met John Payne, tot op heden. Hij is dus de echte hoofdpilaar van Asia en "keeper of the spirit". Payne doet ook al een tijdje mee, vanaf 1991, en heeft sindsdien de rol van bandleader met glans overgenomen van zijn voorganger Wetton en staat op gelijk niveau wat betreft zang en basspel. Chris Slade is ook al een "ouwertje" (59 jaar) en heeft alles al gezien: Mannfred Mann, Frankie Miller Band, Uriah Heep, AC/DC, om maar de voornaamste te noemen. Volledig kaal, eerder klein van gestalte, maar van een goede constitutie getuigend, toonde hij 15 jaar jonger. Drumming: keeps you younger! Tesamen met Slade is Guthrie Govan nieuw in de groep sinds 2001 en de jongste van de bende. Maar hij leek wel even oud als de rest met z'n erg lange gekrulde haar en z'n baard la Martin Barre uit de allereerste Jethro Tull -jaren, die hem gelijk een "seventies"-look gaven. Maar wat een fenomenale gitarist, met die typische jonge snaak-power en snelheid!
 
De show neigde in z'n geheel gezien meer naar "hard-pop FM" dan naar prog rock, waar de 2 laatstgenoemden garant voor stonden. Gedreven en zeer degelijk van opzet. De set bestond hoofdzakelijk uit enkele nummers van het laatste album (een 5-tal) en uit hun allereerste plaat Asia uit 1982, die het meest succesvol tot nu toe is gebleven. Maar liefst 7 nummers van de 9 uit dat album werden gespeeld, waaronder enkele bekende: Here Comes The Feeling, Sole Survivor, Only Time Will Tell, Heat Of The Moment. Ook telkens 2 tracks van de albums Alpha, Astra, Aqua en ééntje uit Aria en Aura passeerden de revue. Ontegensprekelijk een "best of" show.
Halverwege de set werden enkele van de nummers in akoestische versie gebracht. Waar hebben we dat nog gezien? Ook een solo van Geoff Downes zorgde voor een adempauze: "Video killed the radio star" van zijn vroegere groep The Buggles, dat hij ook al in zijn Yes-tijd placht te spelen. Spijtig ging het hier wel een beetje de mist in wegens een valsklinkende vocoder.
De show werd voor de volle 2 uur door de ganse zaal laaiend enthousiast onthaald, met als gevolg 2 knallende bisnummers en een duidelijk dankbare groep voor zoveel geweldige respons vanwege het publiek. Dat werd dan onmiddellijk na de show getrakteerd op een sympatieke meet-and-greet achter in de zaal met de nodige handtekeningen en foto's. Hier heb ik ook mijn graantje van kunnen meepikken (zie memorabilia).

Yellow fever attack? SARS or Asian Flu? None of them all, just a concert of the band Asia in Spirit Of 66, Verviers (French part of Belgium).
 
Who still remembers this once so cheered superband with two Yesmembers (Steve Howe, Geoff Downes), together with 2 other great progrock guys (Carl Palmer and John Wetton)?
The American bar styled pub was packed and that for a normal day in the week and the fact that Asia isn't that hip anymore, or so it seems. A very small stage, hardly big enough with all the keyboards of Geoff Downes and the large drumkit of Chris Slade. This for a former superband.
The line-up was as on the album Silent Nation their most recent album; the already mentioned Geoff Downes and Chris Slade, plus John Payne and Guthrie Govan handling the stringdepartment, they changed bass and guitars between them.
From the old line up only Downes remained, no wonder when you know that he is reponsable for 95% of the repertoire, first with John Wetton, later with John Payne.
He's the main pilar of the band and "keeper of the spirit". John Payne has been in the band for quite a long time, from 1991 on, and proudly took over the role of frontman from John Wetton, with his vocal and instrumental duties on an equal level. Chris Slade is an old timer with his 59 years, he's seen everything with the likes of Mannfred Mann, Frankie Miller Band, Uriah Heep, and AC/DC to name the most important few. Bald headed, short in posture but proving to be of good constituation did he look at least 15 years younger. Drumming: keeps you younger! Together with Slade is Guthrie Govan new in the band, since 2001, and he is the youngest guy. But with his long curly hair and Martin Barre like beard (early Jethro Tull) he fits in with the rest, a true Seventies look. But what a fenomenal guitarplayer with a typical young and fast approach.
 
The concert was leaning towards "hard-pop FM" instead of progrock, the last two mentioned guys were the reason for that. Well driven and steady. The setlist mainly contained songs from the most recent album (five) and their first album Asia (7 out of 9!) a few of these were Here Comes The Feeling, Sole Survivor, Only Time Will Tell, and Heat Of The Moment. From the albums Alpha, Astra, Aqua they did each two songs and one of the Aria and Aura. A true best-of show therefor. Halfway through the set a few songs were given the acoustic treatment, now where did we see that before? A solo by Geoff Downes brought a little breathing moment with a song by his former band The Buggles that he also played in his Yes time; Video Killed The Radio Star. An out of tune sounding vocoder messed this one up a bit, too bad.
The crowd was very enthusiastic throughout the full 2 hour show, resulting in 2 powerful encores and a very thankful band that enjoyed the cheers very much. The audience was treated to a friendly meet and greet session very quickly after the show with the usual autographs and foto's. You can see that I took my chance too.
