Yes live in Dortmund - juni 1984 / DVD 48 minutes
Summer of 1984. Yes is touring through Europe and the band is more popular than ever. 90125 put the band back into the spotlights and almost everyone who listens to the radio will hear the famous tunes of ‘Owner of a lonely heart’ on a regular basis. A bizzy tour itinary brings the band also to Germany. The German media are eager to report on the band. Even teenage magazines like ‘Popcorn’ and ‘Bravo’ bring stories about their live shows. The German TV station ZDF records one of the shows for tv. The show that they did in Dortmund was broadcast during the summer of 84.
The Dortmund show had a interesting extra to it: Jimmy Page was there to perform with the band for one or two extra songs. Unfortunately the ZDF did not broadcast that special part of the show. About two months after the band performed in Dortmund the ZDF broadcasted a 48 minutes registration of the gig. It includes the following 6 Yessongs: ‘Owner of a lonely heart’ / ‘Hold on’ / ‘It can happen’ / ‘Changes’ / ‘City of love’ / ‘Starship trooper’.
Now after almost 21 years the show is still fantastic to watch and I still enjoy it after have seen it for at least 100 times!
Spot the differences: ‘Dortmund’ vs ‘9012Live’
One of the things that makes this registration different from the official ‘9012Live’ video -which was taped in Canada- is the use of another type of construction for the lightshow. At the end of ‘Starshop Trooper’ several of the hoisting beams -onto which the spotlights are attached- descend diagonally and thereby almost touching the stage. All in all a pretty impressive thing. Yes has always been revolutionary in their stage design and this is yet another example of their unique stage designs. Their lightingsystem, sound and lasershow are admired by the press everywhere they perform. I will write more about that subject in an upcoming contribution to this site.
Another detail that makes this show unique when compared to the official ‘9012Live’ video is that the bandmembers are wearing different stage outfits during the European leg of the 90125 tour.
The use of several animations on a screen behind Alan at the end of the stage during the show also gives this show a unique flavor. An example is a turning and tumbling square during the intro of ‘Changes’. In this square several cubes change places all the time.These, sometimes small, differences make it all a little more recognizable for the European fans (like me) who’ve seen (for example) the Rotterdam show on 01/07/1984.
Remarkable in this registration is the heavy bass sound of Squires’ basses. That’s another detail that I also remember from the show in Ahoy’ (Rotterdam-Holland) in 1984, which took place about a week after the Dortmund show. In Ahoy’ Squire made the whole builiding and everybody in it tremble with his roaring sound. A bass-soundexplosion that was absolutely fantastic!!

Het optreden
in Dortmund kent een interessante toevoeging: Jimmy Page treedt ook tijdens
een paar nummers met de band op, maar helaas zijn daar geen beelden van
uitgezonden in de zomer van 1984 door de ZDF. Ongeveer twee maanden nadat
de band in Dortmund heeft opgetreden wordt door de ZDF een 48 minuten
durende registratie van het concert uitgezonden. Daarin komen 6 songs
aan bod: ‘Owner of a lonely heart’ / ‘Hold on’
/ ‘It can happen’ / ‘Changes’ / ‘City of
love’ / ‘Starship trooper’.
Nu ik 21 jaar later voor de inmiddels 100ste keer naar deze show kijk is het nog steeds leuk om naar te kijken en geniet ik er nog steeds veel van.
Zoek de verschillen: ‘Dortmund’ vs ‘9012Live’
Een verschil met de in Canada opgenomen officiële ‘9012Live’ video is dat de band tijdens de europese tour gebruik maakt van een ander soort constructie ten behoeve van de lichtshow. Aan het einde van ‘Starship Trooper’ komen een aantal van de balken waaraan de spots zijn opgehangen diagonaal en tegelijkertijd vlak boven het podium te hangen. Een indrukwekkend gezicht. Voor die tijd was de band (wederom) erg revolutionair bezig, hun podium, licht- en lasershow oogsten overal waar ze optreden bewondering in de pers. Daar zal ik in een later te verschijnen artikel op deze site uitgebreider op terug komen.
Een ander verschil met de ‘9012Live’ video is dat de kleding die door de band gedragen wordt tijdens de europese tour anders is.
Wat ook opvalt zijn de verschillende animaties waarvan gebruik is gemaakt op het projectiescherm achter Alan aan het einde van het podium tijdens de show. Een voorbeeld is de animatie die te zien is tijdens het intro van ‘Changes’. Daar zie je een bewegend raster met daarin verspringende blokjes. Deze, soms kleine verschillen, maken dat het geheel daardoor ook meer herkenbaar is voor de europese fans (zoals ikzelf) die bijvoorbeeld de show in Rotterdam op 1 juli 1984 hebben gezien.
Opvallend aan deze opname is dat het basgeluid van Squire zeer aanwezig is in de mix. Dat is een detail dat mij ook al was bijgebleven van het optreden in Ahoy’ ongeveer een week na Dortmund uit diezelfde concertreeks. Ook daar trilde het beton van het gebouw (en daarmee feitelijk alles en iedereen...) onder zijn basspel. Een geluidsexplosie van Squire’s kant die ik in alle erop volgende jaren niet meer op die manier heb beleefd. Fantastisch!!
