In het begin van dit jaar werd een reunie van de ‘supergroep’ Asia aangekondigd. Asia was een van de eerste groepen die een dergelijke omschrijving pastte want de band bestond geheel uit leden die allemaal afkomstig waren uit een grote band. Gitarist Steve Howe en toetsenist Geoff Downes kwamen uit Yes (na ‘Drama’), drummer Carl Palmer uit ELP (Emerson Lake & Palmer) en zanger/bassist John Wetton uit King Crimson. De muziek die op het debuutalbum ‘Asia’ in 1982 werd gepresenteerd was niet zo progressief als was vermoed, nee eerder gladjes en radiogericht zelfs. ‘Heat Of The Moment’ was dan ook een hele grote hit en duikt nu nog steeds overal op in films en reclames. In de jaren die volgden brokkelde de supergroep line up steeds verder af maar door veel line up wisselingen kon men vrijwel steeds doorgaan. John Wetton was de eerste die de band verliet in 1983 en het was pas enkele jaren geleden dat het contact met enige nog originele ‘Aziaat’ Geoff Downes weer op gang kwam. Samen werkten ze aan muziek voor soloalbums maar het album ‘Icon’ werd onder de gezamelijke naam gebracht en de chemie bleek nog steeds aanwezig. Voor een TV special huurden de heren een studio en namen een akoestische set nummers op bestaande uit Asia en ‘Icon’ nummers met nog een solonummer van Wetton erbij. Met Hugh McDowell van ELO op cello in een sfeervolle set werd het een fraaie registratie die op deze DVD te zien is. |
| Maar nu de maar, en wel een hele grote…Wat je ziet is duidelijk niet wat je hoort! Ik vond het al vreemd dat er geen microfoons of andere apparatuur te zien waren maar toen ik John Wetton een fraaie melodielijn ZAG spelen op zijn akoestische bas maar het totaal niet HOORDE was het al snel duidelijk; playback! De hele sessie was dus al eerder opgenomen (en opgepoetst waarschijnlijk) en nu nam men gewoon als een stel poppenkastpoppen plaats om het visueel te maken. Het absolute dieptepunt wordt bereikt wanneer er een jonge meid van in de twintig ineens opduikt in het decor en begint te ‘zingen’ met de stem van Renaissance zangeres Annie Haslam! Heiligschennis! Nee dit was echt geen slimme zet, de symfo en prof liefhebbers zijn nou eenmaal kritisch en de reacties zullen niet mals zijn hierop. Toch, eerlijk is eerlijk, het klinkt wel verdomde goed, het wat hesere geworden stemgeluid van Wetton geeft wat extra cachet en soul en de arrangementen zijn gewoon voortreffelijk. ‘Gelukkig’ komt deze akoestische set ook uit op CD en die wil ik van harte aanraden, als extraatje staat dáár nou eens een bonustrack op i.p.v. op de DVD. En nu is de weg vrij voor die Asia mark I reunie, bring it on! |

At the beginning of this year a reunion of supergroup Asia was announced. Asia was one of the first bands to fit the ‘supergroup’ description because all four the members came from big and famous bands.Guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardplayer Geoff Downes came from Yes (after the ‘Drama’ album), drummer Carl Palmer was from ELP (Emerson Lake & Palmer) and singer/bassplayer John Wetton was of King Crimson fame. The music that was featured on the 1982 debutalbum wasn’t as progressive as was expected it was smooth and radio orientated even. The single ‘Heat Of The Moment’ was major hit even and still surfaces today in movies and commercials. In the years that followed the supergroup line up was torn apart but by on going line up changes the band could continue. John Wetton was the first to leave in 1983 and it was only until a few years ago that contact with the only remaining ‘Asian’ Geoof Downes was re-established. Together they worked on some music for soloalbums but a full album entitled ‘Icon’ was released last year under the joint names and it proved that there still was some chemistry left. For a TV special a studio was rent and there they recorded an acoustic set of both Asia and Icon songs with a Wetton solo song too.With Hugh McDowell from ELO on cello and in a nice decor it turned out a nice registration, released now on DVD. |
| But -and a big but it is- you don’t see what you get! I found it remarkable that weren’t any microphones or equipment on the set but when I SAW John Wetton play a nice melody on his acoustic bassguitar but didn’t HEAR it, I knew it was all mime and lipsynching! |
| The whole session was recorded and probably polished up before they filmed it to make it a visual set as well. Ultimate low is reached when a young twentysomething year old girl suddenly steps in and starts ‘singing’ with the voice of Renaissance singer Annie Haslam! Sacrilege! Not a bright move, symfonic and prog lovers won’t fall for that I’m sure. But still it remains to be said that it does sound really well. The slightly hoars grown voice of John Wetton give the songs more cachet and soul and the acoustic arrangements are very well done. ‘Thank’ God that there will be a CD version of the DVD and it’s nice to see that it is the CD that get’s the bonustrack for a change, instead of the DVD. Now make way for the Asia mark I reunion please, bring it on |
