Tailfly - Clash Of The Coverbands

After their very first gig at the annual YesFocus Fan Meeting the Dutch Yes cover band Tailfly seized the opportunity to play at a charity event. In the east of The Netherlands in the village of Wehl a special day of cover bands and tribute acts was organised to collect money for the victims of the tsunami in Asia. Unfortunately there were too few people there to actually make a donation, but it is the thougt that counts too.

So Tailfly was originally scheduled to appear at 18:15 but due to some mixingdesk problems all acts were postponed more than an hour. No worries there, there were more band playing and I got a glimpse of a nice and messy Van Halen tribute…

About an hour later me and my friends walked into the nice room where Tailfly already was setting up gear. A microphone problems caused more delay than desired but after that was solved singer Gerdien introduced ‘South Side Of The Sky’. As their would only be for 30 minutes they had to choose their songs wisely. Of course ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’ and ‘Roundabout’ were played but also ‘And You And I’ and ‘Show Me’. In the more up-tempo songs Tailfly found their wings and started to sound more oiled.

Although the stage sound was very bad and the total sound was a bit blurry at times I definately saw and heard improvements in comparision to the Eindhoven performance. I was surprised to hear that they only rehearsed that afternoon, for the first time since that gig. With a better sound, a fever-free guitarist and more preparation time to set things up this could have been a better performance but nevertheless, I enjoyed myself.

Na het debuutoptreden op de jaarlijkse YesFocus Meeting grepen de dame en heren van Tailfly de kans om op een benefiet festival te spelen. Nét in de Achterhoek, in het dorpje Wehl werd een speciaal cover en tribute festival georganiseerd om geld in te zamelen voor de slachtoffers van de ramp in Azië. Helaas waren er te weinig bezoekers om daadwerkelijk een bijdrage te kunnen doen, maar het is ook de gedachte die telt.

Tailfly zou oorspronkelijk om 18:15 beginnen maar door een mengtafel probleem werden alle acts een uur later gepland. Op zich geen probleem, zo kon ik nog mooi even naar een rommelige maar leuke Van Halen act kijken.

Een uurtje later toog ik met mijn vrienden naar de gezellige zaal alwaar Tailfly nog aan het opbouwen was. Problemen met een microfoon zorgde ongewild voor nog iets meer vertraging maar zo gauw dat opgelost was kon zangeres Gerdien het nummer ‘South Side Of The Sky’ aankondigen. Aangezien ze maar 30 minuten speeltijd hadden was het wijs kiezen van de nummers. Dus natuurlijk werden ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’ en ‘Roundabout’ gespeeld maar toch ook nog ‘And You And I’ en ‘Show Me’. In de wat snellere nummers kreeg Tailfly zowaar even vleugeltjes, het liep best gesmeerd eigenlijk.

Het podium en zaalgeluid was helaas niet zo goed maar toch hoorde en zag ik ten opzichte van de show in Eindhoven verbetering. Ik was zelfs verbaasd dat ze alleen nog maar ’s middags even hadden gerepeteerd en verder niet meer. Hoewel het vast een betere show geweest zou zijn geweest met een koortsvrije gitarist, beter geluid en meer voorbereidingstijd heb ik me toch weer vermaakt.
