Noise for Thinkers
Het was druk en warm in The Grill Room van Café Royal in Regent Street met walmende wierookstokjes weggestopt in bloempotten toen Cris Squire (Yes) en Steve Nardelli (Syn) hun nieuwe firma presenteerden tijdens de persconferentie: The Umbrello Entertainment Group PLC.  
Een stampend ritme vergezelde een video die getoond werd met reclame voor indie en the More Drama Tour. Toen Chris achter de tafel plaatsnam merkte hij slinks op dat dit wel een heel andere intro was dan de Firebird Suite.
Oprichter en directeur Chris Squire werd vergezeld door Steve Nardelli, (voorzitter en oprichter), Michael Goodall (oprichter), Alan White (een van de eerste acts die door Umbrello Records gecontracteerd werd), Jon Webster (adviseur van Umbrello Records, voorheen directeur manager van Virgin Records) en Colin Usher (Hoofd van THAT-TV).
 
Umbrello Entertainment bestaat uit twee entiteiten:
 
Umbrello Records (platenlabel). Steve Nardelli en Chris Squire kennen elkaar van vroeger sinds de beginperiode van The   Syn, (De pre-Yes) en toen vorig jaar hun gemeenschappelijk vriend en medebandlid Andrew Price Jackman plotseling overleed, besloten ze een retro album met de titel "The Original Syn" te maken. Een gebaar ter herinnering aan Andrew. Chris hervond the Syn en trof er een heleboel interessant nieuw materiaal aan, waarvan Cathedral Of Love (geschreven door de zanger Steve Nardelli en toetsenman Gerard Johnson van The Syn) het bewijs is. Steve en Chris bedachten dat ze net zo goed hun eigen platenmaatschappij konden beginnen want wie zit er nou te wachten op een paar kerels van boven de 50.   Maar niet alleen The Syn sloot zich bij het label aan. Ook nieuwe bands met muzikanten als basis sloten een contract met Umbrello Records: White (Alan White's band afkomstig uit Seattle), Geoff Downes en zijn band, en Alien Sushi, een band met zeer jonge (van 15 en 16 jaar) en zeer getalenteerde muzikanten. De DVD   van Conspiracy met live opnames zal door Umbrello uitgegeven worden.
THAT-TV (= The Home of Alternative Television; Satelliet Muziek Televisie Netwerk - muziekzender en de eerste onafhankelijke tv zender van Schotland). Colin Usher, directeur van THAT-TV vertelt dat de zender, die in Edinburgh ontwikkeld is, de onafhankelijke muziekwereld ondersteunt, vooral jong talent. Het doet Colin plezier dat er weer gitaren en drumstellen gekocht worden in plaats van draaitafels. THAT-TV gaat de lucht in via Sky Satelliet met exclusieve optredens door beroemde acts en onafhankelijke bands uit Groot-Brittannië en Europa.
The More Drama Tour (met The Syn, White en Steve Howe van juli tot oktober 2005 door de V.S. en Europa met 10th Street Entertainment als management). Volgens Steve Nardelli begint The More Drama Tour op 5 augustus in San Diego.
Chris Squire zegt: "de tour wordt zeer waarschijnlijk gedaan door The Syn, de band van Alan. Steve Howe zal erbij zijn met wat solo gitaar als onderdeel en het plan is ook dat er wat Yes materiaal gespeeld wordt. Vooral materiaal van Drama omdat Geoff Downes nu speelt met zijn band. Daar gaan we ons voordeel mee doen en wat Drama materiaal spelen op het eind van de show"
 
Wie waren er allemaal?
 
Na de persconferentie werd iedereen uitgenodigd nog wat te blijven om wat te drinken en the Grill Room was één geroezemoes van mensen die elkaar weer zagen of die elkaar voor het eerst tegenkwamen, terwijl ze konden genieten van een pilsje om 12 uur 's middags. Behalve de leden van The Syn hebben we de volgende mensen ontmoet: Chris Squire, Alan White, Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, Roger Dean, de vriendin van Chris, zijn dochter Carmen, en vele, vele anderen.
Helaas moesten wij - van YesFocus - op tijd weg omdat we de boottrein moesten halen. Maar we konden goede herinneringen meenemen, een heleboel foto's, blije gezichten en een hoop vertrouwen in de toekomst van Umbrello en we wensen iedereen die erbij betrokken is veel succes!!!

The Grill Room of Café Royal in Regent Street was full and hot with the smell of incense in the air as Chris Squire (Yes) and Steve Nardelli (Syn) presented their new Umbrello Entertainment Group at the press conference. A stumping sound accompanied the video advertising indie and the More Drama Tour. As Chris took place he wittily remarked that this was a different intro than the Firebird Suite.
Founding director Chris Squire was accompanied by Steve Nardelli, (chairman and founding   director), Michael Goodall (founding director), Alan White (one of the first acts to sign with Umbrello Records), Jon Webster (consultant to Umbrello Records, formerly Managing Director of Virgin Records) and Colin Usher (Head of THAT-TV).
 
Umbrello Entertainment consists of two entities:
 
Umbrello Records (record label). Steve Nardelli and Chris Squire have known each other since the early days of The Syn, (The pre-Yes) and when last year their friend Andrew Price Jackman suddenly passed away, they decided to make a retrospective album called "The Original Syn". A touching thing to remember Andrew. Chris again joined the Syn and found a lot of interesting new material, of which the song Cathedral Of Love (written by singer Steve Nardelli and Gerard Johnson - keyboardplayer of The Syn) is proof. Steve and Chris found that they might as well become their own record company. But not only The Syn joined the label. New bands with a base of musicians sign to Umbrello Records: White (based in Seattle), Geoff Downes his band, and Alien Sushi who consists of very young (15,16 years old) and very talented musicians. The DVD with the live recordings of Conspiracy will be released through Umbrello.
THAT-TV (= The Home Of Alternative Television, Satellite Music Television Network - music channel and Scotland's first independent television channel). Colin Usher, Head of THAT-TV explains that the channel developed in Edinburgh supports the independent music scene, especially for young talent. Colin is pleased that people buy guitars again and drum kits and not recorddecks anymore. THAT-TV will be launched on Sky Satellite featuring exclusive performances by established acts and independent bands form around the UK and Europe.
The More Drama Tour (featuring The Syn, White and Steve Howe from July to October 2005 throughout the US and Europe managed by 10th Street Entertainment). According to Steve Nardelli The More Drama Tour will start on August 5th in San Diego.  
Says Chris Squire: "the tour will most likely be The Syn, Alan's band, Steve Howe is gonna be along and doing some guitar solo as part of it and the plan is also to play some Yes material. Particularly the material form Drama as Geoff Downes is now playing with this band. We're gonna take advantage of that to do some Drama material towards the end of the show."
 
Who were there?
 
After the press conference all present were invited to stay for refreshments and the Grill Room was soon filled with people reuniting or meeting each other for the first time, while enjoying a beer around lunchtime. Besides the members of The Syn we met: Chris Squire, Alan White, Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, Roger Dean, Chris' friend, his daughter Carmen, and many, many others.
Alas, we - of YesFocus - had to leave early because we had to catch the boattrain to Holland. But we were able to take along good memories, lots of pictures, happy faces and a good deal of trust for the future of Umbrello and we wish everyone involved a lot of success!!!
