White - White

Bijna alle leden van Yes brengen regelmatig werk uit dat 'buiten' de band om gaat. Soloalbums, samenwerkingsprojecten, de meeste laten wel wat horen zo nu en dan. Maar drummer Alan White, ooit in de legendarische Plastic One band van John Lennon en drummer op 'Imagine' bleef behoudens zijn eerste solo album in de jaren zeventig op dat gebied behoorlijk achter. Naast Yes deed White weinig op muzikaal gebied eigenlijk totdat hij een paar jaar geleden aansluiting vond bij een band in zijn woonplaats Seattle. Die band heette eerst Loyal maar werd vorig jaar vanwege marketingtechnische redenen omgedoopt naar White. Via een lange weg werd er gesleuteld aan een eerste album en pas toen ex-Yes en Asia toetesenist Geoff Downes zijn oude vriend een helpende hand toestak werd het concreet. Enkele maanden geleden verscheen in Noord Amerika het gelijknamige album dan eindelijk en naar verluidt zal het album dit jaar nog een officiële Europese release mogen beleven. Inmiddels is Downes alweer verder op pad met de originele Asia overigens maar wie weet duikt ie nog wel eens op in de toekomst. De band bestaat verder uit Steve Boyce op bas, Karl Haug op gitaar en Kevin Currie op zang en de stijl is geen hoogdravende en bombastische progrock zoals Yes die maakt. Het is meer stevige melodieuze rock en de rauwe stem van Currie doet soms denken aan Peter Gabriel en de hedendaagse Fish ook wel. Ook komt de Nederlandse Kayak wel als referentie voorbij. Muzikaal prima in orde en White klinkt als band gewoon zeer solide en overtuigend. 'Beyond The Sea Of Lies', 'Dream Away' en 'Mighty Love' vertegenwoordigen de band het best en ik hoop echt dat deze band, in tegenstelling tot The Syn (van Yes bassist Chris Squire dat vorig jaar een goed album maakte) wel een blijvertje zal zijn. Zolang Yes zelf nog geen concrete plannen heeft is er ruimte voor dit soort bands.

All the members of Yes release albums outside of the band. Solo albums, collaborations they often present themselves that way. Drummer Alan White, once in the legendary Plastic Ono band of John Lennon an ddrummer on 'Imagine', was a bit of an exception. Apart from his first solo album 'Ramshackled' in the mid seventies he fell behind. He did little to nothing outside of Yes untill he hooked up with a local band in Seattle, where he lives. That band was called Loyal at first but for understandable marketing reasons that was changed to White. It took quite some time before the first album was released, it wasn't untill ex-Yes and Asia keyboardplayer Geoff Downes joined the band too that it was finalized. A few months ago 'White' was released in the USA and it is supposed to be released in Europe as well before th eend of this year too. In the meantime Downes hooked uo with Asia and its´ singer John Wetton but he may return for another album. The band consists further of Steve Boyce op bass, Karl Haug on guitar and and Kevin Currie on vocals and the music of the band isn´t highly skilled and bombastic prog rock, no it´s more melodic rock and because of Currie´s raw voice it is remeniscent of Peter Gabriel and Fish (nowadays) at times. Kayak is a nice band to compare with too. White as a band sound very solid and convincing; 'Beyond The Sea Of Lies', 'Dream Away' and 'Mighty Love' represent the band the best I think and I really hope this band will stay around, contrary to The Syn (Chris Squire´s band that released a great album last year). As long as Yes hasn´t laid down firm plans for the future there will be room for these kind of albums and bands.
